THE GIRLS OF GUATEMALA

Girls will be girls, and that is certainly true of the sixty girls who live in the government owned and operated orphanage in Antigua, Guatemala known as the Manchen Home. Just like girls their age in Texas (and all over the world), the eleven to seventeen year-old Guatemalan girls love to dance, play games, and giggle. The difference between these Guatemalan girlsgirls and the girl next door is that these girls almost had their childhood stolen. Most of the girls who live at Manchen are there because they have been physically abused or were rescued from illegal sex trade operations. Therefore, a deep need to experience the love of Christ in very real ways is prevalent.

That’s where God has brought many 121ers into the picture. In partnership with Buckner Orphan Care, a team of ten people will make the journey to Antigua on the fifth 121CC trip to the orphanage. The one-week trip begins on July 1st. During their stay, the team will teach, do crafts, and work on memory verses with the girls. In addition, there will be opportunities to work on home improvement projects for the home. During previous trips, personal relationships have been established and nourished in an effort to demonstrate the consistent love of Christ. It is difficult to say who feels more blessed by those relationships – the girls of Manchen or the Texan team members who get to know them. One thing is certain, a commitment has been made and God is blessing it.

Visits to the Manchen Home happen twice a year – once in January and once in June. The summer team this year is representative of many different fields of work – administrative assistants, students, teachers, and homemakers, as well as insurance and real estate professionals. You never know what will happen when people from so many different life-walks come together. Last summer, God used the 121 team in a very therapeutic role for many girls at Manchen. The girls were able to release to God resentments that they had held onto for years. On the most recent trip, a group of girls with special needs were ministered to by a team member who God had specifically equipped through previous work experience with special needs kids. Each person brings the unique abilities that God has equipped him or her with and plugs into the project to bring about results that only a unique, creative, and loving God could! Maybe He has a spot on the next Guatemala team for you…
